Every box in this category promises something like “1,800 sq ft.” Ignore it. That number usually means the air in a huge room gets swapped once an hour, which does little for a stuffy nose. The figure that tells you what a purifier can really handle is its smoke CADR, the clean air it delivers in cubic feet per minute.

How we picked

We started with Amazon’s air-purifier best-seller lists on October 28, 2026 and kept the models with real owner volume. Then we sized each one by its verified CADR, compared what owners say about noise and odors, and read lab reviews from TechGearLab and HouseFresh. We dropped two “ozone generators” that rank in the same category. They’re odor machines for empty rooms, not purifiers you sit next to.

CADR vs room size, in one table

AHAM’s rule of thumb: smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of your floor area. Flip it and multiply CADR by 1.5 to get the room it really suits.

Purifier Smoke CADR Room it suits Box claim
Levoit Vital 200S-P 250 ~375 sq ft 1,875 sq ft
Winix 5510 253 ~380 sq ft 1,882 sq ft
Coway Airmega Mighty2 240 ~360 sq ft 1,800 sq ft
KNKA APH4000 226 ~340 sq ft 1,695 sq ft
Levoit Core 300-P 143 ~215 sq ft 1,073 sq ft

See the pattern? The claims run about five times higher than the useful size. If your living room is 500 sq ft and open to the kitchen, two mid-size units beat one “large room” model.

The picks

Levoit Vital 200S-P gets the top spot because nothing about it is weak. Owners are 89% positive on noise across 1,409 mentions, and its washable pre-filter grabs pet hair before it clogs the main filter. Odor removal is its softest topic at 83%.

Levoit Core 300-P is still the bedroom default. It’s small, its filters are easy to find, and the sleep mode is quiet enough that plenty of owners use it as white noise. Our full review has the details.

Winix 5510 is the one for cooking smells, smoke or a litter box. TechGearLab credited its pelleted carbon filter, which holds far more carbon than the coated sheets most rivals use. It also measured 53.7 dB on high, so you won’t sleep on turbo. Leave the optional PlasmaWave ionizer off; TechGearLab did too.

Coway Airmega Mighty2 cleared HouseFresh’s 728 cubic-foot test room in 23 minutes on turbo and 38 on speed 2. Coway quotes 19 dB in sleep mode. HouseFresh measured 35.9 dBA at 3 feet, still quiet but a reminder that box decibels are optimistic.

Filter costs and noise

The purifier is a one-time buy; the filters are a subscription. HouseFresh found the Vital 200S cheaper to run than the Mighty2 because its filters cost less and its motor draws less power. TechGearLab rated the Winix 5510’s yearly running cost slightly above average.

Shark’s NeverChange HP152 tries to fix this with a long-life HEPA filter. TechGearLab noted its scented odor cartridge still needs replacing every 3 to 6 months, and its air cleaning was weaker than the picks above. That’s why it isn’t on our list.

On noise, run the unit one speed lower and size up. A bigger purifier on low is quieter than a small one on high, and it cleans better.

FAQ

What size air purifier do I need for my room?

Use the smoke CADR, not the square footage on the box. AHAM's rule is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area, so a 12 × 15 ft bedroom (180 sq ft) needs about 120 CFM. Go bigger for ceilings above 8 feet.

Why do purifiers claim 1,800 sq ft when they can't clean that much?

Those figures assume one air change per hour. Levoit's Vital 100S-P listing, for example, says it manages 4.8 air changes per hour in 222 sq ft but only one in 1,073 sq ft. The smaller number is the one that matters for allergies.

How often do air purifier filters need changing?

Most main filters last 6 to 12 months of daily use. Coway rates the Mighty2's filter at up to 12 months, while KNKA says 3 to 6 months for the APH4000. A filter-life display or app helps. Wash pre-filters monthly.

Should I run an air purifier all night?

Yes, that's how most are designed to work. Sleep modes on these picks drop to a low fan speed and dim the lights, and they draw little power at that setting.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
