A kettle grill that has barely changed in decades still sits at #1 in Amazon’s charcoal grills. That tells you something. Most people don’t need more grill than that, and the extra money usually buys features rather than better food. What they need is the right fuel for the way they actually cook on a Tuesday night, and enough control to keep the temperature where they set it.
How we chose
We started from Amazon’s grill and smoker best-seller lists on October 28, 2026, and dropped accessories like pellets, gaskets and smoke tubes. That left 12 cookers. For each we compared fuel type, cooking area and temperature range, then looked at what share of owner mentions on temperature control and durability are negative. Independent reviews filled in what owners can’t measure.
Gas, charcoal, pellet or electric?
| Fuel | Pick | Cooking area | What you trade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charcoal | Weber Kettle Premium | 363 sq in | 15–20 min to light |
| Charcoal + offset | Royal Gourmet CC1830S | 824 sq in | Thin lid, wobbly cart |
| Pellet | Pit Boss 150 | 256 sq in | Needs power, small |
| Electric smoker | EAST OAK 30” | 725 sq in | Tops out near 275°F |
| Propane | Megamaster tabletop | 360 sq in | Igniter complaints |
The picks
Weber Original Kettle Premium. It is the grill that does everything reasonably well, from burgers to a smoked turkey. The Premium adds an enclosed ash catcher and a lid thermometer over the plain kettle. Smoked BBQ Source liked the ash catcher but noted that the lid gauge sits well above the grate, so it won’t match what the food feels. Buy a separate probe thermometer. Assembly is the main owner complaint, at 123 negative of 458.
Weber Master-Touch. Same 22-inch bowl, with a warming rack and a lid holder that keeps the hot lid off the deck, which sounds minor until you’ve set a greasy lid on the grass for the fourth time in one cookout. Owners like the heat control. The catch is shipping: 46 of 76 owners who mention missing parts are unhappy.
EAST OAK 30-inch electric smoker. Set a temperature, load chips, walk away. Smoked BBQ Source found a full chip load lasted about four hours at 250°F, and that preheating took 20 to 25 minutes. Their tester also found the smoke flavor milder than a pellet or offset cooker gives. Some owners report it running 25 to 60 degrees hot, so check it with a probe. The Masterbuilt 30-inch is the better-known rival, but 61% of its temperature-control mentions are negative.
Pit Boss 150. A true pellet grill shrunk to tabletop size. It suits two people and a tailgate, and the automatic start-up and cool-down cycles mean you press a button instead of fussing with coals in a parking lot. Temperature control is the gamble, with 33 of 69 mentions negative and some owners saying it stalls near 180°F.
Megamaster tabletop. Nearly double the Char-Broil portable’s 190 sq in on the same 11,000 BTU. Carry a lighter: 100 of 230 ignition mentions are complaints.
Royal Gourmet CC1830S. The most space here for the money, plus a side firebox for real offset smoking. It is thin steel, though. Expect to seal gaps and tighten bolts.
Cuisinart 14-inch. For a beach day it works. It has 21,043 ratings, more than anything else here, but 248 of 328 owners who mention sturdiness say it wobbles or comes apart, so don’t expect it to last many summers.
Buying advice
Match the size to your crowd. About 360 sq in feeds four comfortably. Bigger only helps if you’ll fill it, because an empty half of a big barrel grill still burns fuel and takes longer to come up to heat.
Temperature control matters more than BTUs. Every complaint pattern above, from hot spots to smokers running hot, is about holding heat. A cheap dual-probe thermometer fixes more of those than a bigger grill does.
Check the warranty. Weber covers the kettles for 10 years. The Cuisinart gets 90 days.

FAQ
Is charcoal, gas or pellet better for a first grill?
Charcoal kettles give the most flavor and flexibility for the least money but take 15 to 20 minutes to light. Gas is fastest on a weeknight. Pellet grills are the easiest way to smoke because a fan and auger hold the temperature for you, but they need a power outlet.
How much cooking area do I need?
A 22-inch kettle has about 363 sq in, which Weber rates at 13 burgers. That covers a family of four with room for sides. For more than about ten people or whole briskets, look at 500 sq in or more.
Can a Weber kettle smoke meat?
Yes. Bank the coals on one side, put the meat on the other, and use the vents to hold around 225–275°F. Owners smoke ribs and turkeys on kettles all the time. Use a separate probe thermometer, since the lid gauge reads high above the food.
How hot do electric smokers get?
The EAST OAK and Masterbuilt 30-inch models both top out around 275°F, which is right for low-and-slow smoking but too cool for searing. Finish steaks or crisp chicken skin on a grill.

How we put this together
We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
