The deciding difference: heart features

The SE 3 already covers the health basics most people actually check from day to day, and it’s a longer list than the price suggests. You get sleep score, irregular rhythm notifications, high and low heart rate alerts, sleep apnea notifications, and fall and crash detection.

The Series 11 adds two things that can change your mind. One is the ECG app. The other is hypertension notifications, which Apple says look for signs of chronic high blood pressure. Apple is clear about the limits: the hypertension feature isn’t meant for people under 22, people already diagnosed or pregnant people. It is a nudge to see a doctor, not a blood pressure reading.

Is either one the reason you want a watch? Then get the Series 11. If not, skip it.

Where else they differ

Screen. The Series 11’s display is bigger at each size and twice as bright at its peak. MacRumors’ buyer’s guide also notes thinner bezels. Outdoors at noon, you’d notice.

Battery. Neither is a multi-day watch. Apple’s 18 hours for the SE 3 means a nightly charge, and owners notice. 89 of 203 SE 3 battery mentions are negative, against 115 of 393 for the Series 11. If you want sleep tracking too, the Series 11’s extra 6 hours gives you more slack.

Build. The SE 3 comes in aluminum only. The Series 11 also comes in titanium, which MacRumors says pairs with a sapphire front.

What owners say

Series 11 owners are about as happy as smartwatch buyers get. 97% of 1,132 functionality mentions are positive, and 99% of appearance mentions are too.

SE 3 owners are close behind, with 93% of 628 quality mentions positive. Two complaints stand out. About 35% of size mentions say the 40 mm case is too small, so consider the 44 mm. And 30 of 92 compatibility mentions come from people whose older iPhone wouldn’t pair. Apple requires an iPhone 11 or later.

Value? A tie, at 84% positive for both.

Our pick

Buy the Apple Watch SE 3 unless you can name the Series 11 feature you want. For a first watch, a gift or a kid’s watch with Family Setup, it’s the obvious choice. Buy the Series 11 for the ECG app, hypertension notifications, the brighter screen or a battery that survives a night of sleep tracking.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric. We have not tested these units hands-on. When we do, the page will say so. Prices change constantly, so we link to the live price instead of quoting one.
