JBL Flip 7

Put these two side by side on a kitchen counter and the Bose sounds noticeably better. Take them to a windy beach and the JBL wins, because volume matters more than refinement once there are no walls to bounce sound back toward you. So the real question is simple. Where will you play music most?

The deciding difference

Sound character. TechGearLab rated the Bose higher for sound quality, 7.5 against 6.6, and described its mix as clean and balanced, while the Flip’s bass is pushed forward and its highs turned harsh at high volume. The lab also called the JBL’s presentation more compressed and less detailed.

But 12 dB is a big gap. Since every additional 10 dB roughly doubles how loud music seems to your ears, the Flip will sound about twice as loud as the Bose at full volume. Indoors, 88 dB is plenty. Across an open campsite it isn’t.

Where else they differ

Water. The Flip has the higher IP68 rating and handles deeper submersion, but the Bose floats, which is probably more useful in practice if a speaker slides off a paddleboard or a dock.

Battery. The Flip ran almost 8 hours longer in the lab, 18.2 hours to 10.5. That’s the clearest numbers win in this matchup.

Calls and voice. The Bose has a microphone for calls and phone assistants, though TechGearLab noted it picks up background noise. The Flip has no mic.

Sand. One small Bose annoyance from the lab: sand collects in the grille and is hard to shake out.

What owners say

Both score high on sound: 91% of 1,228 Bose mentions and 92% of 518 Flip mentions are positive. Their complaints differ. Bose owners grumble about volume (32% negative) and battery (31%). Flip 7 owners mostly complain about battery (58% of 224 mentions negative) and the missing charging cable.

Our pick

The Bose SoundLink Flex for most listeners, because most listening happens within a few feet. Choose the Flip 7 if your speaker’s real job is outdoor groups or long days away from an outlet. For louder and bigger options, see our best Bluetooth speakers and Flip 7 vs Charge 6.
