You want lattes at home. You’ve narrowed it to two compact machines: the best-selling budget box on Amazon and the Breville everyone recommends to beginners. They look similar on a counter. They’re built around very different ideas of who’s making the coffee.

The deciding difference

Who steams the milk. The Bambino Plus has an automatic wand. You set temperature and texture, put the jug under it, and walk away. The Casabrews wand is manual and gentle, and the machine needs to cool after steaming before it can brew again. If you make two milk drinks back to back, that gets old fast.

If you mostly drink straight espresso or one latte a day, the gap shrinks, and the Casabrews’s better owner reliability record wins out.

Where they differ

Shots. TechGearLab gave the Casabrews a 7.0 for espresso and measured an extraction yield near 20.7%, inside the 18–22% target. The Bambino Plus scored 6.5. Neither is a shot-quality monster.

Baskets. The Casabrews ships with dual-wall baskets only. CNET found these forgiving with coarser grinds, which suits pre-ground coffee, but the crema is less rich than a true shot. The Bambino Plus includes both kinds, so you can move up to single-wall baskets later.

Speed. In CNET’s comparison with the standard Bambino, which shares the 3-second ThermoJet system, the Casabrews needed an 8-second hot-water flush before brewing. After a few days unused, plan on about 2 minutes. Breville’s machines are just ready.

Build. CNET found the CM5418 and the standard Bambino light enough to tip over when you pull the portafilter out with some force. Neither uses a common portafilter size, at 51 mm and 54 mm, so accessories don’t cross over.

What owners say

Both get high marks for taste. Espresso-quality mentions are 89% positive for the Casabrews and 90% for the Bambino Plus.

The split is lifespan. For the Casabrews, 387 of 1,203 reliability mentions are complaints, about a third. The Bambino Plus does worse: 57% of reliability mentions and 83 of 97 durability mentions are negative, and owners often blame the steam wand. Value lines up the same way, at 84% positive for the Casabrews against an even 50/50 for the Breville.

Our pick

The Casabrews CM5418 wins for most people starting out. It makes a good shot and fewer owners report failures. Choose the Bambino Plus if hands-off milk is the whole point, and register that 2-year warranty the day it arrives.

FAQ

Can the Casabrews CM5418 steam milk right after pulling a shot?

Yes, that's the order its maker recommends. The reverse is the problem: steam first and the machine is too hot to brew, so you have to let it cool. TechGearLab and CNET both flagged the cool-down.

Does the Bambino Plus need a grinder?

It ships with single- and dual-wall baskets. The dual-wall ones work with pre-ground coffee. The single-wall baskets taste better but need a fine, consistent espresso grind, so budget for a decent grinder if you want to use them.

Why is the Bambino Plus rated lower on Amazon?

Mostly reliability. Of 332 reliability mentions, 188 are complaints, and a common one is a steam wand that stops working. Its 4.1-star average comes from 2,431 ratings, 14% of them one star.

Which one makes better espresso?

In TechGearLab's scoring the Casabrews actually edged it on espresso quality, 7.0 to 6.5. The Bambino Plus won on ease of use and milk.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric.
