Cuisinart TOA-70 vs Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro: Dials or Smarts?

Short answer: The Cuisinart TOA-70 for most households of two to four: it cooks nearly as well, adds a grill plate and carries a longer warranty. Get the Breville if you need the bigger cavity or the best toast.

These two land in the same shopping cart all the time. Both are 1800 W convection ovens that air fry, both fit a family dinner, and both have thousands of Amazon ratings. The difference is philosophy. The Cuisinart is a set of dials. The Breville is a small computer that decides how to steer heat across five elements.

The deciding difference: how much oven you need

ShouldIt put the Cuisinart at about 17 liters inside and the Breville at about 27. That’s the gap between a 3-pound chicken and a 14-pound turkey, which is Breville’s own claim. If you cook for a crowd or bake in a 9 × 13, the Cuisinart is simply too small. If you don’t, you’re paying in counter space for room you won’t use. The Breville is 21.5 inches wide.

Where they differ

Toast. Advantage Breville. ShouldIt gave it 9.0 against 8.7. Its first batch of four came out evenly golden, and the second round shortened itself automatically. The Cuisinart’s medium setting runs 5 minutes and left lighter and darker patches. A second batch on the same setting came out darker, so you drop to light yourself.

Roasting. Advantage Cuisinart, narrowly. Its whole chicken scored 9.4 to the Breville’s 8.9, and the thighs reached a safe 191–193°F.

Controls. This one’s personal. Dials can’t crash, but the TOA-70 has no preheat alert and no status cues, and its light goes off when you open the door. The Breville’s interface shows what it’s doing.

Longevity. The Breville’s record worries us. Of 416 owners who mention durability, 293 report trouble, often a dead heating element or cracked glass. Durability isn’t among the Cuisinart’s top topics at all, and its warranty runs a year longer.

What owners say

Cuisinart owners are broadly happy, with 84% of 1,296 performance mentions positive. Heat output is the split topic: 136 of 253 mentions say it runs too hot or cooks unevenly. Cleaning draws 142 complaints out of 324.

Breville owners are even more upbeat about results. 87% of 2,624 performance mentions are positive. Value is the tension. Of 853 owners who bring up value, 311 say it’s overpriced. That’s 36%, a lot for an oven people otherwise love.

Bottom line

Most people cooking for two to four will be happy with the Cuisinart. It roasts as well, toasts nearly as well and comes with an extra year of warranty cover. Pay for the Breville only if you’ll actually use the extra 10 liters, the proof and slow-cook modes, or the self-adjusting toast.

FAQ

Does the Cuisinart TOA-70 preheat automatically?

No. There's no preheat signal and no digital display, so give it a few minutes on bake before the food goes in. The Breville preheats on its own for bake, roast, pizza, air fry, cookies and slow cook.

Can the Cuisinart TOA-70 fit a 12-inch pizza?

Yes. ShouldIt fit a 12-inch pizza and a 3-pound chicken in it, and squeezed in six slices of toast, just barely. The Breville takes a 13-inch pizza and up to 9 slices.

Which is easier to clean?

Neither is a joy. Both use quartz elements that are hard to wipe once grease hits them. Cleaning is the TOA-70's most criticized topic among owners, at 44% negative, and ShouldIt found its pan coating stains after big roasts.

How we put this together

We compared manufacturer specs and Amazon listing details, read the patterns in Amazon owner reviews (we refresh this snapshot regularly), and scored each product with our published rubric.
